Eating: Chaise

The new Chaise lounge open on Main Street is going to be my new home away from home for the next few months. It's all about comfort food there, and since it's done by the same owners as Burgoo, you bet your bacon wrapped meatloaf that it's gonna be good! I've already gone twice now, and sunk my teeth into their delicious fried chicken with grits and of course, their meatloaf. But starting in September, they've got a daily Blue Plate special!! I'm so there for the tuna casserole!!!
Chaise is located at 4444 Main Street.
Eating: 2 Chefs and a Table

On our Sunday morning quest for brunch, Jill and I were making our way to Railtown, which is the new area of town just on the outskirts of Gastown. You know, where Alibi Room and Deacon's Corner is located? Deacon's is where we were headed in fact, but we got sidetracked by the buzz coming out of 2 Chefs and a Table, a restaurant that I've been aching to try out forever and everytime I've gone, has been closed.
We had their Monsieur Andre's Lunch, which was basically a Croque Madame (so shouldn't it have been called Madame blah blah blah's Lunch?) Anyway, the place is cute and sleek in that grassroots kind of way, and the food was absolutely delicious (though their Croques are no match for the ones found at Au Petit Chavignol) and I can't wait to start bringing people here!! Their 5 course meal for $44 sounds like a dream as well!!

I Wear Tight Clothing, High Heeled Shoes, That Doesn't Mean That I'm a Prostitute!
Last night I went to our local fair, the PNE, along with a few hundred other feygelahs, to spend an evening with some familiar funky divas: it was a free summer concert by EN VOGUE!!!! With Corn Dogs in one hand and a bag of mini-donuts in the other, I was ready for some Dawn Robinson, Cindy, Terry Ellis, and Maxine!!! Bring it on Girls!!!
When they sang Don't Let Go, I totally wanted to dedicate that to The Guy! lol! "Don't you wanna be, more than friends?" I love their video for this, look at the rage they have in their eyes. Also, all of them seem to get their time in the spotlight and can each hold their own singing-wise. Too bad Dawn had to go and break up the group by leaving it, otherwise who knows how well they could've maintained their success?
From their classic Hold On and the soulful Giving Him Something He Can Feel to the Salt-N-Pepa rap duet Whatta Man and the diva-esque My Lovin' You're Never Gonna Get It, the girls covered all of their big hits and several covers of oldies!
And of course, who can forget their anthem, Free Your Mind?
A fantastic evening!!!

Movies: Moon
This is the story of Sam Bell, who has been working on the Moon for 3 long years and is ready to go home now that his contract is done. His only companion is a machine named Gerty, voiced by Kevin Spacey. Two weeks before he is set to go back to Earth, something strange happens and the rest of the film will blow your mind in that Sci-Fi kind of way!!
I quite enjoyed the storyline; I thought it was interesting and original. The imagery too was great to look at, from the harvesting of the moon's energy to watching the little moon truck roll along the moon's surface. Cool movie, especially for those sci-fi nuts out there!

Preston's at the Coast Hotel

Went up to Chilliwack on Friday night to get a sneak peek at the new Coast Hotel that's opened up. A new Coast Hotel is in the works for Downtown Vancouver, but this renovated one in Chilliwack was a nice weekend treat. Located next to a giant pond full of turtles, frogs, and lily pads, the hotel is a luxury for this small town 90 minutes out of Vancouver.
Check out those lily pads!! The plan is to create a patio atmosphere here, with tables and chairs lined up along the water!

The restaurant they've developed for their hotel chain is called Preston's, and the food was downright delicious! First off, we started with a pitcher of Pim's, the perfect summer drink! For appies, we had their spare ribs and a plate of gyoza with scallops. Divine! My meal consisted of lamb with veggies that were bathed in butter, and mashed potatoes that melted in my mouth.

Keep your eye out for Preston's, coming soon to the new Coast Hotel in Downtown Vancouver!

The Music and Life of Arthur Russell
Last weekend at Joanne and Sam's, over Old Fashioned's and Pim's Cups, I was introduced to the music and life of Arthur Russell, an American musician who died of AIDS in the early 1990s.
I'm intrigued and want to watch this documentary:
His music is so melodic and dream-like, at least the two songs I put here are. I'm so gonna look more into his music, and you should too!!
Fluffy

I just read Simone Lia's graphic novel Fluffy, a story of love, hope, despair, adventure. Actually it's the story of a man named Michael who is the guardian of a bunny named Fluffy, who doesn't know that he's a bunny. It was recommended by an old blog reader. It was alright, but I found the bunny to be a bit annoying like a small child, which I guess is what it was.
I prefer other graphic novels over this one, I think. It didn't much for me storywise or visually.

Love for the new Skytrain Line!

I am loving the new Skytrain line that just opened up this week. Monday was a gong show when the Canada Line opened its doors and allowed passengers to ride for free for the day. The line ups were city blocks long to try to get on, so I didn't bother. Instead, I waited for the next day when I could just hop on with my transit card and boy was it glorious! Roomy and spacious, clean and odor-free! I managed to get a seat, I didn't have to sit next to someone that smelled like booze or urine, and I didn't have to stand on the platform waiting for 3 trains to pass me by before being able to get on one!
Yesterday Philip and I escaped downtown on our lunch break and took the new line all the way out to Richmond and hopped off for some authentic Chinese food. I was pleasantly surprised to see that one of the new stops was at the River Rock Casino, so the next time I have a concert to attend out there, I can just hop on the train to go!
I hope the trains stay nice and clean but I'm sure the grafitti artists and vandals will begin their work soon enough. Still, it's convenient and about time!!

Movies: District 9

I accompanied my friend Jill last night to go watch District 9. I had no interest in seeing it, but in the end, it was pretty good. It's the story of a spaceship that winds up looming over Johannesburg, and its inhabitants are brought down to the city and then sequestered in a special area known as District 9. This soon becomes a slum and the aliens are somewhat part of society, though there is much opposition. I've read that this is a bit of a commentary on apartheid, but as far as a sci-fi movie goes, it was a good watch.

The Weekend
My weekend began early as I had Friday off. Friday morning, Momma and I went for dim sum as his last meal in Vancouver before heading off to the other side of the country to pursue his PHD. I'm happy for my Momma but will miss her dearly! I can keep abreast on all his adventures in the big T-Dot over on his new blog, The Rice Memex. Best of luck to you and your pursuits, Momma!

After dropping her off at the airport, I headed home but found myself at a red light, staring at a sign that had a big arrow on it that read MOVING SALE. A garage/yard sale on a Friday? How peculiar. So, like Alice through the looking glass, I headed over and found myself entering the home of this woman who was getting ready to pack it all up and live in a trailer and drive across the country. She used to own a First Nations art store so there were totem poles in the corner, giant masks hanging about, but they were going for $200+ which may be a bargain for art collectors but not for bargain collectors like myself. I don't know much about First Nations Art, though some of the hanging masks were kinda cool. I looked at a few of the handmade baskets but even those were $20 or more.

I love walking through stranger's homes and picking out things that I want to buy. I ended up purchasing two retro 60s blue glass vases (they basically look like giant bongs with long stems) for $5 a piece. Score! I'd been searching for some of these vases for a while now and to find two at such a cheap price made me giddy! I also bought some vintage jewelery (broaches) and an Art Deco looking clock.
The piece de resistance however is this strange object I found which the lady told me was either a First Nations walking or talking stick. It was a long piece of wood and at the end of it was a hoof. I think it was a deer's hoof, from the looks of it. The lady's dog kept trying to bite at the hoof, to which she said, "Oh, he likes anything organic." A bit weird and gross, but a conversational piece nonetheless, which is why I shelled out the ten bucks for it.

That evening, I attended a comedy show which was part of the Olio festival. It had its highs and lows, but mainly a lot of lows. Gay (and HOT!) comedian Ryan Steele was there and his act was pretty funny. He does a show every week at The Odyssey so it was a nice surprise to see him part of this festival.

Afterwards, Jill, Dave, and myself went to gay night club Pulse for Depeche Mode night. We arrived at 10, danced non stop until 2am and then left.
Saturday I wound up at another yard sale, where I bought myself an arborite formica table with 4 chairs, all for the price of $100. I've seen one of those chairs go for $99 on its own so I figured this would be a pretty good bargain. I did talk the guy down to $80 for everything but since I couldn't fit the table into my car, and he offered to drive it over in his truck, I ended up giving him the full $100 that he was asking.

On Sunday, I went to volunteer with The Guy selling Krispy Kreme donuts to the public as part of a fundraiser. It was great to see him and to be helping out with a good cause.

Sunday evening consisted of watching the Season 3 premiere of Mad Men, followed by a visit to Joanne and Sam's, who made me a Pim's Cup followed by a taste of Hendrick's Gin. They were having Old Fashioned's near the end but I had to stop drinking as I was driving and needed to get up early in the morning.
All in all, a busy, productive, interesting, and satisfying weekend!

High Tea at the Shangri-La
What better way to spend my Saturday afternoon than enjoying a service of Afternoon Tea at the new Shangri-La with Kendra and Susannah? It was absolutely lavish!

When we arrived, the set was all laid out ready and waiting for us, as I had made reservations earlier in the week. The details were excellent, from the tinted green glasses that held our fresh water (placed on top of a linen coaster of course). The China bone tea sets were lovely, with matching sugar container and creamer. The teapots that held our tea were full size teapots, too! Not only that, but the staff came around and poured our tea for us! And don't forget the scrumptious tidbits adorning the three tiers of our Tea Service, including savoury sandwiches and sweet desserts. The classic scones with Devonshire cream and jam took up the middle tier, of course.
All this for a mere $30!! And if you go on the weekend like we did, there's a piano player in the room playing live music the entire time! Superb! Class act all the way!
We ordered a glass of wine/champagne afterwards to toast the wonderful afternoon. They did mess up our bill a bit, but overall, this has become my new favourite place for Afternoon Tea in Vancouver!! Can't wait to go back!

Movies: Julie & Julia

The expectations I had going into this movie were:
1) I'm going to be hungry by the end of it.
2) I hate Amy Adams so therefore, the only interesting parts will be the Meryl Streep scenes.
The reality of what happened?
1) I was STARVING by the end of it - all those shots of amazing French food!!! My stomach is growling right now just thinking about it.
2) Amy Adams. Who knew? I quite enjoyed her in this, and was actually pretty fascinated by the story of "Julie" who was a government employee who wanted to be a writer and ended up blogging and becoming a big hit!

Not that I have any sort of delusions that I could be anything like that, but it was definitely inspiring to watch her story unravel. Meryl Streep was fabulous, but that's already a given. It was a wonderful movie and you can't help but leave the theatre grinning from ear to ear and heading to the closest French bistro you can find.
I loved the dinner parties that Julie threw for her friends as she made her way through Julia Child's cookbook!
However, it's too bad that this wonderful film has a bit of a shadow hanging over it, since the real Julia Child was apparently famous for being a homophobe. Note that the movie didn't touch on that part of her life at all!
Overall: Go SEE IT!
Movies: The Time Traveller's Wife

The book is better. The book is always better, though. That being said, I went with my friend Emily to the sneak preview last Thursday and she hadn't read the book and was brought to tears by the movie. It's definitely a unique love story for people who don't know what it's about. It's not a typical girl meets time travelling boy romance. That said, I'd recommend reading the book as it's much more detailed and gets into more subplots. If you really want to see this movie, your best bet is to wait for rental.

TV: Big Brother 11
Can we talk?
So Big Brother last night: What a MESS!! Those three girls crying over Jessie's eviction. COME. ON.
I know I posted Jessie's photo up before and was wowed by his biceps, but now that we're halfway into the summertime, it was definitely TIME to get him out of there!! Oy, he was so annoying!
I've totally turned and have been on Team Jeff and Jordan for awhile now. Jeff's East coast accent is pretty damn smokin', not to mention his eyes, his lips, his arms,...

As for Chima - I'm sorry she was raped and had to go through crap like that in her life, but in the context of this game - WHAT A CUNT.
Ditto for Natalie, who is just annoying and should be sent packing too now that she no more coattails to ride!
And don't EVEN get me started on the crazytown that is Lydia! I mean, she had such potential to be cool but she's mentally unstable and a downright mess!
Kevin, being this year's token gay, is bland and boring most of the time but last night when he was going on about the girls' crying over Jessie, finally got semi-interesting.
Russell? I think the fact that he's a Mixed Martial Arts Fighter makes him hot to me!
So, I'm hoping Jeff, Jordan, Rusell, and Michelle are the final Four in the house.
Update: Woo Hoo!!! Big News going on at the Big Brother House!!

Careless Whispers
I've been listening to Quebec band The Lost Fingers recently, and love their album Lost In The 80s. Toted as having a gypsy jazz style, this album is a cover of songs from the 80s including Paula Abdul's Straight Up, Samantha Fox's Touch Me, Bon Jovi's You Give Love a Bad Name, Michael Jackson's Billie Jean, Alannah Myles' Black Velvet, and this wonderful version of George Michael's Careless Whisper:
It's lively and fun and makes me feel like I'm having a jug of sangria in some cantina somewhere, while the rain dances on the lake outside. And is Careless Whisper quickly becoming one of the most covered songs around? If you want a more angry and dark version, check out the one by The Gossip.
But back to The Lost Fingers, whose acoustic freestyle sound is perfect for summertime evenings. Check out more of their songs on their website!

Catch it If You Can
This past weekend Emily and I went down to Seattle (she drove, thankfully) to watch the world premiere of the musical version of Catch Me If You Can, which will be heading to Broadway this Fall. This isn't the first time that Seattle has played host to a show before it hit the big time in New York. This was where Hairspray first debuted, and more recently, Shrek and Young Frankenstein.

Well the people who brought about Hairspray have teamed up again to do another 60s period piece, Catch Me If You Can, based on the Leonardo DiCaprio/Tom Hanks film and of course, the true story of Frank Abagnale Jr.
The creators was enough draw for me, including musical direction done by Rosie O'Donnell's old chum, John McDaniel. However, taking a look at the cast made me want to go see it even more!
The star of the show is the young Aaron Tveit, who is currently starring on Broadway in Next To Normal. You can see his performance on the Tony Awards here (he comes in mid-way through the song).

Isn't he dreamy? And he can sing his gorgeous little heart out! Hot damn! He was spectacular on Saturday night. Thank the gods for letting him take a leave of absence from Next To Normal to come to Seattle to do this. (He returns to Broadway when this is all done, so hopefully I'll get to see him if and/or when I go in October!)
Also in the cast is Norbert Leo Butz, who was the original Fiyero in Wicked. But the scene stealer was Kerry Butler, whom I saw two years ago in Broadway's Xanadu! Her faux Aussie accent was hilarious, but I of course was dazzled by her roller skates and ribbons in her hair!

Her turn as Brenda in Catch Me If You Can only gives her stage time during the second half of the show, but boy is it worth the wait. When the FBI comes to her place on her wedding day, what does she do as the love of her life jumps out the window to escape them? Does she turn him in? No, she breaks out into this spectacular song, that's what she does!!! "Fly Away" was the moment of the musical for me, bringing me to a pool of tears. Here's Kerry singing it for Sirius Radio:
Aaron Tveit's Happy Ending is also a showstopper! Unfortunately, I couldn't find it on YouTube, but here's another song from the show he does that was showcased at a cold reading. It's a beautiful love song that I wouldn't mind having Aaron sing to me with his shirt off, like he does in the show!
Catch Me If You Can plays at the 5th Avenue Theatre in Seattle until August 16th.

Party in Coal Harbour
I found myself on the 12th floor of an apartment building in Coal Harbour last night at a fabulous swanky party held by a First Nations beauty queen who also happened to be a young mother of 3 and married to a yacht realtor. Alexis and I kept turning to each other and asking, "WHERE ARE WE?"
The place was unbelievable. For downtown Vancouver, this was a 5 bedroom place which took up practically the entire floor of that building. In the master bedroom there was a giant stripper's dance pole in the middle of the room. Her closet was something that Carrie Bradshaw could only begin to dream of. The view of the harbour was incredible.
And don't forget the staff - from the door person in the lobby to her hired DJ, bartender, and chef. Three miniature dogs ran around everywhere. A one-armed man was in attendance, as was a pianist who ended up playing some songs on the baby grand piano in the corner. The entire evening was just surreal.
And of course, The Guy was there. The Guy drove me home at the end of the night. A nice hug and a friendly kiss, nothing too significant.
But he did wait till I got in the house before he drove away. I know it's little but it meant so much!! The perfect ending to a larger than life evening!

A Proud Moment
Yesterday I was at the Pride parade, standing up on a balcony watching above the crowds.
The Guy walked by, he was marching in the parade with the teachers. He looked up and caught my eye. He stopped in the middle of the parade, stared at me, blew a kiss, and then pointed in my direction. (He also blew a kiss to my friend Alexis that he knows but she was like, "No. That was for YOU. I got one too, but that was for YOU.")
Needless to say, I didn't pay any attention at all to the rest of the parade.
I talked to him today and he said he had no idea why he looked up at that particular moment. He said how hard it was walking in the parade and seeing all the spectators, that they all blurred together, but at that one moment he chose to look up and there I was standing there.
I told him I must have been calling him with my mind.
I'm seeing him tomorrow.
I feel excited and scared and nervous and anxious and hopeful.

(500) Days of Summer
Amazing.

Truly amazing.
If my heart were to break into a million little pieces and then decide to get together to make a movie, this would be the movie it would make. WOW. Loved. Loved. LOVED.
Do yourself a favour, go see this movie. It's the story about Tom, who falls in love with Summer, but somewhere along the way their relationship takes a turn, and this is the 500 days that chronicles that journey.
GO SEE IT!!!

True Blood
I'm only just starting to get into the HBO series True Blood, after a friend had told me it wasn't worth watching. One year later and I have gone against my friend's un-sage wisdom and am finding myself lost in the world of New Orleans, vampires, and most importantly, Jason Stackhouse:

Though, I am also a fan of Sam Merlotte's:

And they're not even vampires!! The show has established a world where vampires and humans co-exist, sorta. The Japanese have invented a synthetic blood called True Blood, which the vampires guzzle like beer, and no longer have to feed off hu mans. It's a world where those who want to have sex with vampires are called Fang Bangers, where the latest drug isn't E but rather V (vampire's blood), where religious groups protest the existence of vampires (God Hates Fangs). It's a well written, well crafted show that adds to the mythology of vampires and takes it to that next level. Anna Paquin's mind-reading Sookie is the heroine who find herself wrapped up in a relationship with town vampire, Bill.

Another great television program from the creator of Six Feet Under!

Happy Pride!
So the heatwave has susbsided and the weather is downright lovely. I was at the movies the other day watching (500) Days of Summer, to try to escape the heat, and halfway through, the theatre totally had a power outage!!! Damn!! The movie was AWESOME too!! I can't do a full review since I only saw half of it, but I will go back and I already know that I will be recommending this one. It was brilliant!!
Anyhow, it's Pride in the city this weekend! (As well as Powell Street Festival, the World Police and Firefighter Games, the Celebration of Light fireworks!) So if you're looking for some thing to do, there's lots out there this long weekend!
You've probably already heard the new Madonna song. Here's a remix of it for you to enjoy and to get your weekend started!!
