Did You Just Take Your Childhood and Pour It Into a Drink?

The weekend was a bit hazy. It started off Friday night with Iris at the Vancouver Art Gallery, attending their sporadic event, Fuse, which is an evening party where you look at art, watch random performances, and drink!

So we found ourselves in the Fuse lounge drinking it up and then wandered through some exhibits, before ending off with glasses of wine out on the patio at the gallery's cafe. And it was a gorgeous night for it, too! Warm, no rain, beautiful.

The next day I was at my friend's one year-old birthday party.

I needed a drink later that evening so Iris and I went to hang out at Bao Bei, in Chinatown, where we discovered the most marvelous drink ever - Ribena Rum and Coke!

I literally exclaimed to the owner Tannis Ling, who is also a reknowned bartender and was the one pouring our drinks in front of us at the bar, "Did you just take your childhood and pour it into a drink!?" Ribena was a main staple of my childhood, and it seems to be pretty much the norm amongst other Chinese Canadians, along with the likes of Spam.

She replied, "Actually, I did!" and described her mother washing plums and then drinking the "plum water" which is now infuzed in one of her other specialty drinks at the restaurant. Genius, I tell you. Genius!!!

On Sunday I met up with The Guy for coffee, and it was so good to see him, and I was torn between hanging out with him all night or heading over to Emily's to watch The Tony Awards. I chose to go with the Tonys, which turns out to be the gayer option over hanging out with the gay guy you're in love with. Anyhow, when we hugged goodbye, I kissed him and it was in public and I never do those sorts of things! I am usually completely against Public Displays of Affection but I just couldn't help myself and it just came over me! We were standing right on the corner of a busy intersection too. It just came completely naturally. I'm totally blaming those Ribena Rum and Cokes!!

The Tonys of course, were a giant FAIL. Blah. But it was fun to watch with my Broadway hag and scream in anger at all the Hollywood people in attendance and roll our eyes together at the lame musicals getting nominated and fantasizing about our next trip to NYC together...
