Movies For the Summer

There are the big summer blockbusters coming out, but here is a selection of some interesting looking films that should be considered too. They look like they won't get too wide a distribution, unfortunately. But, hopefully you'll get an opportunity to see some of them.

Excited
This Canadian film is a romantic comedy with a unique perspective. It centers around a man who has Premature Ejaculation.

Year of the Carnivore
Another Canadian film, directed by Sook-Yin Lee, this is the story of a girl trying to find love...or is it sex...? Either or, it looks fun and light, but with a hint of intelligence.

Spring Fever
A gay movie from China! It looks intense and beautiful and tragic. I can't wait and hope I get to see it. This premiered at Cannes back in 2009, winning an award for Best Screenplay. The making of the film sounds just as intriguing, with the director ignoring a 5 year ban imposed on him on filmmaking for having made a previous film, Summer Palace.

Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work
This will probably get a wide release out of the bunch. It's a documentary on comedienne extraordinnaire, Joan Rivers. It looks awesome and when I say awesome, I mean sad and funny at the same time.

  1. Excited looks hilarious and promising. The Joan Rivers one was shown here in Toronto at the HotDocs Festival just awhile ago. We were going to watch it but bailed at the last minute. Hopefully the gay Chinese one isn't like the other bad gay chinese films. I just wiki-ed Summer Palace. Never heard of it, totally my type of film. Must see.
